Why this blog...

I am the mother of the three most talented, intelligent and beautiful children ever to live on this earth. I am also privileged to be married to the most wonderful man! He has added three additional talented, intelligent and beautiful children to our family! I have a job that I mostly love, a wonderful education, a beautiful home, marvelous family, and I have the privilege of belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I have been greatly blessed in my life, but I sometimes forget that. So, I decided to create this blog as a way to remind myself of all the many blessings and miracles that surround me. (I'm also terrible at keeping a journal- so this will be something for my kids to enjoy as well.)

I hope you enjoy what you read. I would love to hear what you think!

It Depends on Your Angle...

This life can be very difficult and challenging in so very many ways!

But it is also beautiful and wonderful too! And in more ways than I can personally count.

It all depends on the angle.

For example, my math class is usually a place where it is hard to find smiles. My students are in my class because math is the most challenging subject for them (or close to it). So, they see the hard quite often.

But this week, I had a student look at my class from a different 'angle'. When others groaned while getting out the whiteboards, he said, 'I love whiteboards!' When others complained about working with a group, he declared, 'I love working in a group!' When others rolled their eyes at completing an online game, he kept repeating, 'I love math on a computer!'

My favorite quote from him this week? "This is a fun math class!" And best of all, he really meant it!

So I need to remember that when life is challenging to change my view's angle- then I can say, 'I love ____________!' And mean it too!

Things that were august in August

This has by far been the most difficult start to a school year for me... so I thought I should focus on things that have been august in my life, seeing as how it is August after all!

august: inspiring reverence or admiration; of supreme dignity or grandeur; majestic

Claire:

So much to admire about this little beauty and her parents!

Luke and I were able to attend her blessing with many of our family. And Cassie was so wonderful to allow us grandparents (Luke and I ) to hold Claire for the ENTIRE meeting afterwards! (Luke and I were unable to attend the gathering after the meeting- so this was our only chance to spend time with Claire.) Claire was awake the whole time and was captivating. This grandmother ABSOLUTELY LOVED watching Grandpa Luke holding this precious child, playing with her arms and legs, and just plain being enamored of his granddaughter!

Luke:

He continues to be such a blessing in my life! He is always saying or doing just the right thing at the right moment... He truly cares for me and loves me!

Projects:

It is not so much the projects themselves that I find august- it is what they do for my state of mind and attitude that captures my admiration...

Working on a project calms me down, focuses my mind... finishing a project brings great satisfaction!
Katy and Jeremy's blanket and pillowcases

Next jean quilt all laid out...

If all goes well, this will look great with my new sofa!
And it was free! Plus, there is nothing quite so relaxing
as removing furniture staples and tearing something apart!

Five batches of plum jelly- YUM!!!
So many good things in my life!

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Today is the birthday of one of the greatest men I have ever known, my dad!

He has always been such an example in my life. He is loving and kind, generous and caring, firm in his faith and testimony of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

When I was very young, my dad spent several summers in California (we were living in Minnesota at the time) in order to earn his master's degree. I don't remember much of that time myself, but I did learn the importance of an education through his example.

I also remember watching my dad work on our home in Eagan, Minnesota. He learned to do many tasks himself, including laying tile in order to make our home so much better on a budget they could afford... I guess I have tried to emulate this many times in my own life thanks to my dad's example.

My dad is a great example of loving others, especially family, even when you do not necessarily approve of their actions or agree with their point of view. He will always have a listening ear for whomever comes to him with a problem.

My dad has been my inspiration for doing family history work. I love so much to hear him tell of his childhood- all of the memories of our family. Now every time I 'find' a new name of a relative or make a new connection, I cannot wait to tell my dad.

My dad even helped me by taking on part of the role of 'dad' to my own children through all of the years that I was single. He was and is such an excellent example of what a man of God should do and should be.

I love you, daddy! Happy birthday!

A Few of my Favorite July Things...

I am glad it is August! Luke's health has been on a roller coaster this last month, from great, doing well, to awful, doing so poorly!

It's hard to watch his discouragement and to feel so helpless about it all. I'm afraid I haven't been the most upbeat person to be around... which doesn't exactly help anyone.

Switch to my beautiful niece, Alyssa-
she is pregnant right now and has a rare complication that means she hasn't been able to eat anything for months. The doctors tried so many things to help, including several attempts at temporary feeding tubes. Nothing worked well enough- so now Alyssa has a permanent feeding tube- no fun at all! And she still has such a hard time- and isn't even due until December! To make it even worse, she also has at least one kidney stone...

But she is such an example to me! Here is her FB post today (and she means every word!):

"'Happiness is a choice only you can make' I love this quote. Specially today when I feel so sick it's so important to remember that you get to choose no matter what your trial is if you will be happy or not. Choose happiness and you will find good things in every situation!"

So I thought I should follow this great example by making a short list of some favorite July things that make me happy: (in no particular order...)

1) Luke- it makes my heart sing when he prays and refers to our marriage as something 'precious' to him. I know he truly loves the Lord and loves me.

2) My MIL (and FIL)- they are THE BEST!!! they are always so kind to me and so giving to all of those around.

3) Most wonderful 1st grandchild! With the best parents!

4) My little girl dancing!

5) my bishop- (speaking over the podium during sacrament meeting and everything!) He had been talking about the importance of 4 minutes. Then he switched to speaking to husbands about the importance of their wives and showing love- he ended up telling all of the husbands to go home, sit on the couch next to their wife, and then to kiss her- yes, for 4 minutes! Fun bishop!!! And great thought too!

6) New addition to our home:

Although I did not get to practice my re-upholstery skills on this (yet), it is so beautiful! And brings a smile to my face just looking at it... Plus Josh had somewhere to sit when he came by this week.

7) My Father-in-Heaven- He is always there for me! I feel his presence when I am able to attend the temple, and I feel His influence as I 'suddenly find' people as I am doing family history work... He is the ultimate happy thought!

Living with CFS

Luke has Chronic Fatigue Syndrome... but no, he doesn't sleep all of the time.

CFS is something that people know all about only if they have it or someone very close to them has it. Some people, including a doctor I have met, do not believe that CFS is real- or rather, they believe it is a mental disorder- not an actual physical disorder at all.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says it this way:
"Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is a debilitating and complex disorder characterized by profound fatigue that is not improved by bed rest and that may be worsened by physical or mental activity. Symptoms affect several body systems and may include weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory and/or mental concentration, and insomnia, which can result in reduced participation in daily activities.
As the name chronic fatigue syndrome suggests, fatigue is one part of this illness. With CFS, however, the fatigue is accompanied by other symptoms. In addition, the fatigue is not the kind you might feel after a particularly busy day or week, after a sleepless night, or after a single stressful event. It's a severe, incapacitating fatigue that isn't improved by bed rest and that is often worsened by physical activity or mental exertion. It's an all-encompassing fatigue that can dramatically reduce a person's activity level and stamina.
People with CFS function at a significantly lower level of activity than they were capable of before they became ill. The illness results in a substantial reduction in work-related, personal, social, and educational activities.
The fatigue of CFS is accompanied by characteristic illness symptoms lasting at least 6 months. These symptoms include:
  • increased malaise (extreme exhaustion and sickness) following physical activity or mental exertion
  • problems with sleep
  • difficulties with memory and concentration
The symptoms listed above are the symptoms used to diagnose CFS. However, many CFS patients and patients in general may experience other symptoms, including:
  • brain fog (feeling like you're in a mental fog)
  • difficulty maintaining an upright position, dizziness, balance problems or fainting
  • sensitivities to foods, odors, chemicals, or noise
  • depression or mood problems (irritability, mood swings, anxiety, panic attacks)
The severity of CFS varies from patient to patient. Some people can maintain fairly active lives. For most patients, however, CFS significantly limits their work, school, and family activities for periods of time.
While symptoms vary from person to person in number, type, and severity, all CFS patients are limited in what they can do to some degree. CDC studies show that CFS can be as disabling as multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, end-stage renal disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and similar chronic conditions.
CFS often affects patients in cycles: Patients will have periods of illness followed by periods of relative well-being. For some patients, symptoms may diminish or even go into complete remission; however, they often recur at a later point in time. This pattern of remission and relapse makes CFS especially hard for patients to manage. Patients who are in remission may be tempted to overdo activities when they're feeling better, but this overexertion may actually contribute to a relapse."

Sounds just grand or what?!
But Luke's doctor is terrific. She has him on an experimental type treatment that, mostly, seems to be helping...

CFS is so very misunderstood by so very many people. I think it might be because those people do not see the day to day limitations.

Most days, when you look at Luke, you see someone who is a bit quiet, someone who is concentrating on his computer or on reading the scriptures or the news. If you talk with him, he replies pleasantly, although sometimes without a prolonged conversation.

You do not see the level of effort it takes to get out of bed on the worst days. And then, it is sitting, sometimes with his head down, just waiting for the exhaustion to finally leave.

You don't see the after effects of conversation on the worst days... the inability to make the smallest of decisions for hours afterwards- when to eat, when to sleep- it becomes again a period of waiting until he can feel even a little more normal.

And noises, sometimes ordinary noise we all hear every day, can set off unexplained emotions or trigger exhaustion...

As you can see, even after living with someone with CFS for a couple of years, I still cannot adequately explain it all- one of those experiences you have to live with to understand.

So what is there in all of this to be grateful for?

Well, there are "good" days. Luke will not die from this- although it is not painless. Most of my family has been understanding to some degree. Luke is getting better (he now has more good times than bad)

Best part? I know that he will be all the way better one day.... it is something that has been promised to both of us many times by our Father in Heaven.

Now if I can only build my faith enough to be patient until that day comes...

Captivated by Claire!

Who wouldn't love this cute little one?!

So precious...

And doesn't her mother look radiant?

And Dad looks so proud!

Beautiful family!

Luke and I are so very blessed!

The perfect first grandchild!

I was so grateful for the unity and happiness between Cassie and Allen as they welcomed this precious little child into the world. I remembered back to my own first child experience and realized the huge difference- my then husband was not so supportive, not even there in the hospital for long... and afterwards, not around much at all really.

I am so grateful that Claire has such wonderful parents!

We are all simply captivated by Claire!

July Fun!

Love my family!

What's not to love, right?

And with the 4th- I had time to see so many of Luke's family- we were able to spend the day, with Josh, at Luke's parent's house. They are such good people! And Leslie and fam were there for a visit along with Jared and fam, Adrienne and fam, and Jordan and fam... little Cassity is just the most adorable!

Then fun with some of the girls at a baby shower for Cassie- still not feeling old enough to be a grandma- but it will be fun!

Also got to watch my own little girl dance- ALWAYS FUN!!

Ben is also quite the dancer!

Pregnant women should NOT be able to move like that...
Also the granddaughter's 1st dance recital! ;)

I am so grateful to be part of such a FUN family!
